NO TOPOLOGY
01It does not know what depends on what
Text search finds the repair manual for a pump. It does not know that the pump cools the main engine, so it cannot warn you about what happens to the engine while the pump is down.
WoyCoreKnowledge Graph
A ship is not a pile of documents. It is a system of systems: pumps that cool engines, parts that fit several machines, rules that apply in one port and not in the next, manuals that a service letter quietly changed. WoyCore models those relationships explicitly, so its answers follow the logic of the ship, not the wording of the text.
Capabilities are introduced in stages – see the roadmap.
01Why text search is not enough
Most AI assistants work by finding passages of text that look similar to the question and asking a language model to summarise them. That works for general knowledge. On a ship it breaks in four predictable ways.
NO TOPOLOGY
01Text search finds the repair manual for a pump. It does not know that the pump cools the main engine, so it cannot warn you about what happens to the engine while the pump is down.
NO ARITHMETIC
02Two seals described in similar language can have different dimensions, materials and pressure ratings. A model that judges compatibility by wording will eventually recommend the wrong part.
NO VERSIONS
03A long original manual often matches a question better than the short service letter that changed it. The outdated procedure wins, and nobody notices.
NO HIERARCHY
04International conventions, national and port requirements, company procedures and manufacturer instructions are mixed into one answer, and the stricter local requirement gets lost.
WoyCore addresses these problems in the structure of its data, not by asking the model to be more careful.
02What the graph holds
The WoyCore knowledge graph is a formal model of your fleet’s world. It is built for machine reasoning: every entity has a stable identifier, every relationship is explicit, and every fact can be traced back to where it came from.
VESSELS AND SYSTEMS
Vessels identified by IMO number, their systems and equipment in an SFI-coded hierarchy, with “part of” and “depends on” relationships and inherited criticality.
SPARE PARTS
Parts with manufacturer numbers, IMPA and ISSA codes where available, physical properties such as dimensions, material and pressure rating, and the equipment that requires them.
DOCUMENTS
Documents, their revisions and their individual clauses, tables and figures, with applicability to vessel type, flag, equipment and company.
REGULATIONS
Requirements linked to the jurisdictions where they apply, from international to regional and port level, and to the equipment classes, vessel types and flags they govern.
MAINTENANCE FACTS
Jobs, completed work, running hours, defects, certificates and findings imported from the planned maintenance system, each with its time of validity.
PROVENANCE
For every fact: the source system and record, when it was observed, the period it is valid for, and whether it was imported, entered by a person, suggested by AI or confirmed by a person.
03Graph-guided answers
Every question passes through the graph before any text is read. This is what makes a WoyCore answer applicable to your vessel, current and checkable.
Which vessel, which equipment, which location, which role. Permissions are applied here: a passage you are not allowed to see never reaches the AI model at all.
Which documents and requirements apply to this equipment on this vessel in this jurisdiction, which revisions are current, what depends on this unit, when it was last serviced.
Semantic and full-text search run together, but only inside the applicable, approved sources the graph selected. The best passages are ranked for relevance.
Before the answer is written, every passage is checked for later documents that modify or supersede it, such as service letters and circulars.
The answer is generated with each statement linked to the passage it comes from, and each link is verified. Statements without support are not presented as facts.
When there is no basis for an answer, WoyCore says so and lists the information it needs from you, instead of filling the gap.
Answer anatomy
Every substantive WoyCore answer has the same structure:
04The graph in practice
TOPOLOGY
The situation
The engineer on watch reports: “Pressure dropped on the fresh water cooling pump. What should I do, and what does it affect?”
What WoyCore does
The graph shows that the pump serves the charge air cooler, which is part of the main engine cooling chain. The repair procedure is taken from the pump’s own manual.
The result
Two things in one answer: the consequence first (the main engine’s charge air cooling is affected, with the engine manual’s guidance on load cited) and then the repair steps, with the manual clause and page cited.
PARTS
The situation
“The original seal for the separator is not on board. Can I use the seal from the fire pump?”
What WoyCore does
Instead of comparing descriptions, WoyCore compares recorded physical properties: inner and outer diameter, thickness, material and pressure rating. It then checks stock on board through the planned maintenance system.
The result
“The original is out of stock. The fire pump seal has identical specifications, and two are in the spares store.” Or, if the properties differ, a clear no, with the differing values.
COMPLIANCE
The situation
“We are calling at a port in California. What must we do before changing over to low-sulphur fuel on the auxiliary engines?”
What WoyCore does
The graph knows that California lies within the United States, which lies within the scope of international conventions, and that an auxiliary engine is a class of internal combustion engine. It selects only the requirements that apply to that combination: the international regulation, the stricter state requirement and the company’s fuel changeover procedure, plus the manufacturer’s instructions for the installed generators. The search then runs inside those documents only.
The result
A changeover plan that satisfies the strictest applicable rule and fits the actual equipment on board, with every step referenced to its source.
REVISIONS
The situation
An engineer prepares a piston overhaul using the original engine manual from the yard.
What WoyCore does
When the manufacturer’s service letter was loaded ashore, WoyCore recorded that it modifies a specific procedure in the manual. Every answer that uses that procedure is checked against such links.
The result
The answer shows the original instruction and, clearly marked, the modified procedure from the service letter, with its reference and date, and offers to prepare a requisition for the parts the letter requires.
PLANNING
The situation
The superintendent asks the chief engineer for a list of spares needed to overhaul all sea valves and the bow thruster at the next docking. Done by hand, that takes days with parts catalogues.
What WoyCore does
The graph walks the equipment tree for those systems, collects the parts their overhaul requires and compares them with the quantity on board.
The result
A shortage list with exact part numbers and a draft requisition, ready for the chief engineer to review and send.
HISTORY
The situation
A new chief engineer joins; the outgoing one leaves in two hours.
What WoyCore does
WoyCore gathers the contract period’s open and closed jobs, defects, requisitions and unresolved warnings, and uses the graph to group them by ship system.
The result
A handover draft that leads with chronic problems, open risks and upcoming jobs, each linked to its record.
05Knowledge you can trust
An AI is only as reliable as what it reads. WoyCore treats its knowledge base the way a classification society treats a drawing: nothing becomes an approved source until someone responsible has checked it.
Every upload is checked before processing: trusted file formats only, licence basis, relevance to the maritime domain, personal data, and hidden instructions aimed at manipulating an AI.
Documents are parsed with their structure intact: sections, numbered clauses, tables and figures. Scanned documents are recognised. Text is divided along the document’s own clause numbering, so a citation points to a clause, not to a page.
Equipment, parts, documents and requirements mentioned in the text are linked to the graph. Facts suggested by AI are marked as suggestions and queued for review.
A designated person approves a document before it becomes a source for operational answers. A new revision is recognised as such; the old one moves to “superseded” and stays available for comparison.
Approved knowledge is packaged, signed and delivered to the vessels it applies to.
| Tier | What it covers | How it is used in answers |
|---|---|---|
| Approved regulatory texts, class rules, manufacturer manuals and service letters for the exact equipment, company SMS and procedures | Cited as requirements and procedures | |
| REFERENCE | Industry guidance, reports, training content, medical guides | Cited as guidance, never as a legal requirement |
| INFORMATIONAL | Marketing material, presentations, general articles | Used only when the question is about them, and labelled |
| UNVERIFIED | Candidate material, crew uploads awaiting review, personal documents | Labelled as unverified; never establishes a requirement |
When a manufacturer issues a new revision, WoyCore compares it with the previous one clause by clause and table cell by table cell. Changed values are recorded with the date they take effect. Content removed in a new revision is kept in the old one and flagged, so an engineer who remembers an old value is told it no longer applies.
